|Light up the night sky with this brand new red flare!|
Flares are an item in Rust. Flares are used to create a source of temporary light at night so that players can navigate the world. Players may hold a lit flare (left mouse button with flare equipped) and hold it in their hand to create a mobile source of light which moves with the player, or players may light a flare and throw it (right mouse button with flare equipped) to create a stationary source of light which remains static in the world.
Since flares can be thrown and light up an area without the item being held makes them excellent for nightly raids or engagements of any kind during nighttime. An example of this might be: "A player has spotted an enemy player or is engaged by one. This player may then throw a flare at the assumed location of the enemy, lighting the area up and making the enemy visible in the process.
The player might engage or run depending on the situation." Another major use is in coordinating location with teammates at night, in the case that you should get separated, have one of the team members throw a flare into the air, thus letting teammates know where to regather. Be careful though, as this tactic also opens you up to potential attack if someone else notices the flare.
A thrown flare lasts for approximately 2 minutes.
Currently, there is a bug where flares do nothing and serve no purpose.
