They were found under the Resource sub menu of the crafting menu. Using Trees as a source of wood to craft Wood Planks was extremely ineffective as players would only get enough Wood to craft one Plank for every tree. In contrast, each Wood Pile held about 9 Planks worth of Wood when harvested with a Hatchet or Pick Axe.
In order to build a basic home with a Wood Foundation, Wood Ceiling, 3 Wood Walls, a Wood Doorway and 4 Wood Pillars players would need to craft or obtain 38 Planks - the equivalent of 380+(30 Wood/200 Metal Fragments for either a Wooden Door or a Metal Door.
To ensure their home was secure, players needed to place a door in the either a Wood or Metal Doorway. Wooden Doors did not require Planks to construct, however, if players left their house without a door then another player could just install their own door and effectively make the house their own. This meant that players (especially solo ones), had to make sure that they secured their house with closed doors before they disconnected.
Planks could be used to craft the following Wooden structural items:
Note: If the player had access to a Workbench then these crafting times were reduced by 66%.
Planks could be crafted using 10 Wood. Planks took 2 seconds to craft.
Note: They were a default crafting recipe.
- Wood planks could also be used as a source of fuel for Camp Fires and Furnaces, but it was extremely inefficient compared to using Wood.
- Initially, Wood Planks had the description "A type of resource".
